The Murder Stone, Kettleshulme

DOESN'T FIT - A GENUINE, OFFICIAL 'MURDER STONE' WITH NO MURDER ATTACHED. Flagged via geograph.org.uk's 'murder stones' tag. This is a Scheduled Monument (Historic England list entry 1013479, first listed 1995) and a genuine Early Bronze Age standing stone - Historic England's own designation record gives no murder story at all, describing it purely in archaeological terms (a prehistoric ritual/ceremonial marker). The name appears to be simply what it's always been called locally, with no attached legend found anywhere. Worth flagging directly against this site's other Whaley Bridge-area entry: about 3 miles away, on the Disley-to-Whaley Bridge road, stands the genuine 19th-century William Wood murder memorial (already in this archive as 'The Murder Stone (William Wood)') - a completely different, much later, purpose-built stone. The Modern Antiquarian's own entry for this prehistoric stone explicitly notes the William Wood stone as a separate, nearby monument, suggesting the two are at real risk of being confused precisely because they share a name and a general area. Logged here mainly so the two aren't muddled.
