All original text on this site — the stone entries, their histories, and the sourcing notes — is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0).
This is the same license Wikipedia uses, and for the same reason: this archive only exists because people have generously shared what they know — in comment threads, in family history, in books, in photographs taken on their own time. It felt right that whatever gets built from this research should stay just as open.
In plain terms, this means you're free to copy, reuse, and republish anything written here, and to adapt or build on it — a new website, a printed guide, a research paper, whatever — as long as you credit murder-stones.org as the source, and license whatever you make with it under the same CC BY-SA terms, so it stays open for the next person too.
Photographs are handled separately. Where a photo on this site carries its own Creative Commons license (credited beneath the image), that photo keeps its original license and terms — reusing it means following those terms, not the site-wide one. Photos without a credit are used with the photographer's direct permission and aren't covered by this license at all; please don't reuse those without asking first.
A note on the underlying facts: historical facts themselves — a name, a date, that a murder happened at a particular spot — aren't anyone's property and can't be copyrighted by anyone, including us. What's licensed here is the way it's written up: the research, the phrasing, the connections drawn between sources.
