PC Robert Bambrough Memorial

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION - the original Facebook comment that flagged this described it as a 'murder', but the historical record is more complicated: William Wood, a 20-year-old convicted poacher, was being walked in handcuffs from Billericay to Brentwood by Constable Bambrough (a 43-year-old former Jersey soldier) when he began to struggle near Hutton; both men fell into a muddy pond, and Wood trampled the constable while trying to get free, though Bambrough kept hold of the restraining chain rather than letting him go. Bambrough died from the effects the next day. At trial in March 1851, the court accepted that Wood hadn't intended to kill him, and he was convicted of manslaughter, not murder. ALSO NOTE: the stone itself is modern, not contemporary - it was placed in 1990 by Billericay Police to mark the 150th anniversary of Essex Police, 140 years after the death, so this is a retrospective memorial rather than a period murder stone. It stands beside the A129 Billericay-to-Hutton road near Church Green. A separate Facebook commenter claimed direct descent from Wood (their '3x great grandfather'), which is an interesting personal-connection lead worth following up directly with them, though not something verifiable from the sources checked here.
