Inscription
To the memory of Mary, wife of James Kavanagh of Penmaen, who was murdered by ... on the 3rd October 1829, aged 75 years. (The blank is in the original: the murderer's name was deliberately never filled in, per local tradition and multiple independent on-site transcriptions - see below.)
Context & sources

Flagged again via a Facebook post in the Love Gower Community group (17 May 2025) and cross-checked against a freely-readable, independently-transcribed source (Geograph, photographer Alan Hughes), which resolves most of the earlier 'thin sourcing' flag. Mary Kavanagh, a 75-year-old widow of Penmaen, was found beaten to death - face down in her garden, per The Cambrian newspaper's contemporary report - on 6 October 1829; her cottage had been ransacked and two watches taken, though a larger sum of hidden savings was left untouched. No perpetrator was ever caught. The blank line left in the gravestone inscription, in place of the murderer's name, is locally believed to have been left deliberately - a device meant to prick the murderer's conscience into confessing. The stone stands by the porch of St Andrew's Church, Penrice; the church itself is a Grade II listed 12th-century building with a huge, ancient yew in the churchyard.

Behind a paywall

  • Welsh Newspapers Online (National Library of Wales, newspapers.library.wales) - free, searchable digitised 19th-century Welsh press incl. The Cambrian; should cover Oct/Nov 1829 reporting of this case and might help with the illegible name in the inscription, but a direct search here didn't surface the right article (the site's search doesn't respond well to automated query strings) - worth a person searching it directly.
