Seven members of the Marshall family - blacksmith Emmanuel, his wife, mother, sister, and three children including four-year-old Gertrude - were bludgeoned to death at their home and attached smithy on 21-22 May 1870, in a crime The Spectator called a 'special horror'. IMPORTANT: sources disagree on the killer's name - the BBC's 2018 article (via Dr Jan Bondeson) names him John Jones, while Buckinghamshire Live, a 2018 book-length study by Neil Watson, and Wikipedia all name him John Owen, an itinerant blacksmith who claimed Emmanuel owed him money.
