Llwyd ap Iwan Memorial Stone (Arroyo Pescado / Nant-y-Pysgod)

Found via a Welsh-language search (llofruddiaeth/llofruddio, 'murder'), after Cadw/Coflein/Archwilio themselves turned up nothing - this one came from a Welsh magazine (Barn) article and an academic paper, not a heritage database. Outside the UK/Ireland, but included on the same basis as the Hannington and Jackson Pillar entries - it's an actual inscribed stone marking a murder, this time tied to the Welsh diaspora rather than to Wales itself. Llwyd ap Iwan (b. 20 Feb 1862, Bala; son of Michael D. Jones, founder of the Welsh settlement in Patagonia, Y Wladfa) emigrated to Patagonia in 1886 as an engineer on the Central Chubut Railway, and later explored uncharted parts of the country (1893-97) with Tehuelche guides. By the early 1900s he was managing the Arroyo Pescado (Welsh: Nant-y-Pysgod/Rhyd y Pysgod) branch store of the Compania Mercantil del Chubut, about 30km from Esquel in Cwm Hyfryd. On 29 December 1909 two American bandits, going by the names Wilson and Evans, held up the store; when ap Iwan resisted handing over the safe's contents he was shot dead. A popular legend that the killers were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - who had lived at a ranch in nearby Cholila, Chubut, 1901-1907, and were locally well known - persists to this day and inspired academic work (notably theatre scholar Mike Pearson's 'Theatre/Archaeology', 1994, and later 'Carlito's Cave'/'Bubbling Tom' project). Most historians now doubt this: Cassidy and Sundance are generally held to have been killed in a shootout with the Bolivian army in San Vicente in November 1908, over a year before ap Iwan's murder, and Robert Evans and William Wilson - who had lived at Rio Pico, Chubut, and may have known Cassidy and Sundance - are the more commonly cited suspects; they were themselves killed in a military raid about two years after the murder. A contemporary Welsh-language eyewitness account (a letter from Robert Roberts, one of ap Iwan's employees, published in the Welsh press) describes two Englishmen as responsible, adding further confusion to who was actually responsible.
