John Pryor Ledger Stone, Burford

GEOGRAPHY CORRECTION - flagged to the site's creator as being 'right on the Shropshire/Worcestershire border', but this is actually Burford in West Oxfordshire, a Cotswold town on the Gloucestershire border - a different Burford entirely from the smaller Shropshire/Worcestershire village near Tenbury Wells, and about 90 miles away from it. Independently verified against Wikipedia and other sources before adding. John Pryor (or Prior), steward to William Lenthall (Speaker of the House of Commons during the Civil War and Commonwealth) at Burford Priory, was murdered in 1697; per local tradition he was killed in the Priory garden by or on the orders of a nobleman referred to inconsistently across sources as 'Lord Abercorn' or 'Lord Abercomb', after refusing some demand made of him. A gamekeeper was reportedly wrongly executed for the murder - the wrongful-execution angle is corroborated by more than one source, though named suspects and exact circumstances vary between accounts, none of which read as fully primary here. The story persists partly through Burford Priory's modern reputation for hauntings: a ghost seen in the old vegetable garden, an elderly man in old-fashioned dress carrying a flintlock or blunderbuss, has been linked by some writers to the wrongly-executed gamekeeper rather than to Pryor himself. Buried 6 April 1697, aged 67, and commemorated with a ledger stone in the parish church of St John the Baptist, Burford (not at the Priory itself, which is private and not the burial location).
