Enoch Stone Memorial

Enoch Stone, a 49-year-old framework knitter and musician, was found with severe head injuries on Nottingham Road on the night of 23 June 1856 and died the next morning; he'd apparently been robbed. A reward of £120 was offered (£100 from the government, £20 from Spondon parishioners) but no culprit was ever caught. CORRECTION NOTE: a version of this entry circulating elsewhere claims the inscription reads 'A Most Brutal And Cold-Blooded Murder' - multiple independent sources checked here (Find a Grave, Spondon Online, a paranormal-history blog, and the Derbyshire Historic Environment Record MDR13997) all describe the stone as engraved only with the initials 'E.S.', with no mention of that fuller phrase. Treat the longer wording as unverified until someone checks the stone in person. CONFIRMED VIA DERBYSHIRE HER (MDR13997): the case was formally closed at an inquest held at the Malt and Shovel Inn, Spondon, in July 1856 - a detail not captured above.
