Boundary Stone, Rockingham Forest (unconfirmed)
No inscription reported - a plain weathered cross-headed boundary marker, per the photo it was reported from.Context & sources
UNCONFIRMED LEAD - needs real investigation before treating as a genuine entry. Flagged via a Facebook/Instagram comment (RuralHistoria page, commenter 'Si Eppey') showing a photo of a lichen-covered cross-headed stone on the boundary of Rockingham Forest near King's Cliffe, which the commenter 'believes' marked a murder and a hanging place - no name, date, or supporting detail given. A search of the Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record turns up genuine 'Cottingham/Rockingham Boundary Stones' in the district, but these are recorded as ordinary forest boundary markers with no murder association in the record. Separately, local folklore (via a 2022 Northants Live piece drawing on Marian Pipe's book 'Northamptonshire Ghosts and Legends') describes a 'Stone Chair' or 'Punishment Chair' near Weldon, a few miles away, used to restrain wrongdoers - a different object and a different kind of story (restraint/starvation rather than a murder-site marker), so probably not the same stone. Worth contacting the original commenter for the exact location before doing anything further with this one. CONFIRMED, RE-CHECKED: the Northamptonshire HER record (now read in full) confirms these are ordinary parish boundary markers (marked 'R' and 'C', for Rockingham and Cottingham) recorded in David Hall's Rockingham Forest Project survey (1960-1999), with no murder association in the record - consistent with what was already noted above. No change needed; this remains an unconfirmed lead.
